Giolitti has the reputation of having excellent gelato in Rome, and it is fair to say that it lived up to that reputation. You may not find THE best gelato in the city , but you will not be disappointed--and you will not have a shortage of flavors!! If you are looking to get some great coffee, this is a great place to get that as well.
Expect crowds but you will move along quickly! Make sure you order at the register FIRST and then proceed to pick your flavors/receive your coffee by showing those respective counters your receipt! -

Giolitti is a well known place to go if you're looking for gelato. You can just tell by how crowded it is and the dated exterior. I read about it in a blog and found out that it is one of the oldest gelaterias in the city.
It can be really hard to figure out what to do once you're inside. You see a line of people surrounding the gelato but it turns out you need to pay prior to lining up. The register to pay is near the entrance/exit. You pay for the size of gelato that you would like and choose the flavors when you are in line to grab your dessert. There are so many people it's really hard to look at the different flavors. We were served when we were at the edge of the counter so I had to quickly just pick two flavors. The guy misunderstood me and only gave me one flavor + whipped cream. It was a bit disappointing that I couldn't even try what I wanted to because it was so hectic. The gelato was delicious though. I went with tiramisu and the texture was a bit chunky.
I didn't even know that above the counter there were screens that display the different flavors until after ordering. If I am at Giolitti again, I will be choosing the exact flavors I want before lining up due to all the chaos around the counter. I suggest you do the same so you can try the flavors you want! -

When in Rome ... do what Yelpers do ... which is apparently all go to Giolitti for Italian gelato. O mio Dio, this is one packed pastry, coffee, and gelato restaurant with another horde of people outside eating the creamy good stuff in a cone or cup.
And you know what? It's actually really dreamy gelato. The tourist in me went all-in with 4 luscious scoops in one cone plus a dollop of cream on top and an extra spoon to share it all with my spouse. I think the four flavors we got were chocolate, lemon, raspberry, and heaven, but I'm not sure about the last one. Regardless, they were rich and bursting with flavors.
I was glad we quickly joined the long line at the counter until learning that we had to pay for the gelato first. So, I hopped in that line and then started over at the counter. After finally getting the gelato, I huddled with the herd outside with a big Yelper smile on may face with each lick of the little gelato spoon with what made Giolitti famous.
So, ya, add this 5-star review to the pile for Giolitti letting everyone know that when in Rome ... do what Yelpers do ... go to Giolitti. -

This gelato institution around the corner from Hotel Nazionale has cases and cases of gorgeous ice creams, granitas and decadent sweets displayed throughout. And don't get me wrong, it is not merely show since treats really are quite good and among the better in this Italian capital. The "black cherry" Amarena is one of their signature flavors and is fantastic especially when paired with their dark chocolate gelato topped with fresh whipped cream. And the pastries and cookies are truly a site-so many choices.
The Gelateria really is more of a full service dessert cafe with an espresso bar and very friendly staff. It is more like 3 1/2 stars, but given the breadth of options for ice cream shops throughout Italy, I found this place just a half notch below our other favorites.
Still, there are also so many mediocre Gelateria in Rome so if you're anywhere in centric storico I would definitely put this one on your list. You won't be disappointed. -

Go to the front cashier and it will be obvious what size gelato you want. You also can go cone or no cone. The cashier had a small child that she paid more attention to than the customers, I liked that, your kids should come first.
The gelato servers were curt and seemed exasperated after we asked to try 2 different flavors. Everything was good. But pistachio and black cherry were my favorites.
